September's Capturing Kids Hearts message is Empathy.
What is Empathy?
Empathy is the ability to be aware of, understand, and be sensitive to another person’s feelings. Instead of focusing on how these feelings impact ourselves, empathy motivates us to focus on others and respond with care and compassion.
Why Focus on Empathy?
Empathy builds a positive classroom culture. Empathy empowers students to learn to understand each other to build trust and safety in the classroom.
Empathy strengthens community. Empathy helps students strengthen their relationships with classmates, other students and adults at school, and at home.
Empathy prepares your students to be leaders in their community. The best leaders understand the people they lead and are able to show they care.
Empathy in Action:
Take a different perspective. When you take a different perspective, you put aside your own feelings and reactions to see the situation through another’s eyes.
Put aside judgment. Take a pause, and rather than express conclusions about a situation based on what you see, step back and consider other things you may still need to know or understand.
Communicate that you understand. Instead of giving advice, respond with reflective phrases like, “It sounds like you...” or “I hear that you...” to express that you understand and care.

WSMS Parents/Guadians this call is to notify you that students are coming home with a blue Opt-Out form for Morgan County Schools SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment) Program. Each year Morgan County students in grades 6-12 are screened for mental health concerns and substance abuse risk factors so these students may receive early intervention and support if identified. The form contains more information about the SBIRT program. Please sign and return only if you do not want your student to participate in the screening and SBIRT program. Opt-out forms are due back to school by 8/27/24 and screening will take place on 9/3/24. You can review the screens we use on the school's website under useful links- PSQ (Patient Stress Questionnaire) and CRAFFT.

It is happening. Morgan County WV has its very own WVICL affiliated youth composite mountain bike team! What does composite mean? It means that the team will accept 6th -12th grade students from the surrounding area to include MD. PA. and VA. At times there aren't any local teams and this makes participating accessible for many.
The official NICA season starts in July but we wanted to get in some preseason activities. As such, we are planning a team meet and greet with the coaches at 10am this coming June 15th at the Cacapon State Park. We'll meet near the Rock and Roll trailhead. Look for the Canopy that will be set up in the area. This will be a great opportunity to ask questions and for everyone to interact.
We will not be doing any trail riding for this event. The plan is to focus on games and other activities that everyone can participate in, regardless of skill level. A serviceable bike and helmet are sufficient. We will have team loaner bikes on hand as well.
For those that want to get ahead and register now. Let me know and I'll send you the registration link directly. If you are looking to volunteer as a coach let me know and I'll send you a link to get the process started. If you have any questions about either, feel free to reach out.
There is a Waiver that will need to be filled out by everyone not yet fully registered in the Pit Zone. Please get these done as soon as possible. Please note the hot links for WVICL, NICA and Waiver for more info.
Hope to see you there!

League Core Principles:
Equality
All student-athletes are treated equally. Team scores are a combination of points scored by both boys and girls.
Inclusiveness
All student-athletes participate 100% of the time. No one is “benched” and everyone is encouraged to try racing, irrespective of how fast – or slow – they may be.
Strong Body
NICA emphasizes wellness through lifestyle, nutrition and exercise. Improving physical fitness and overall wellness are at the center of NICA’s training and education.
Strong Mind
NICA student-athletes are students first. Our program encourages academic excellence.
